ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

 

The following section presents some of the most important advantages of qualitative research:

  • Deep comprehension that leads researchers to explore why and how people make decisions based on their experiences.

  • The adaptation and modification of questions during the process depending if they find new topics of interest.

  • It helps discover deeper details from participants when they do not express them directly;   it also helps comprehend emotions, attitudes, and behaviors.

  • Qualitative research works with samples in their real environments, obtaining a more complete view of individuals.



Qualitative research comes with certain key disadvantages that can affect its effectiveness:

1. Subjectivity of Findings: Qualitative research findings are often subjective because they rely heavily on the researcher's interpretations. This subjectivity can lead to inconsistencies in results and make it difficult to draw definitive conclusions.

2. Limited Samples: Qualitative studies typically involve smaller sample sizes. As a result, the findings may not be easily generalized to larger populations.

3. Time-Consuming Process: Qualitative research requires considerable time for data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Methods such as interviews and focus groups can significantly extend the duration of a study.
